Lip Surgery Recovery and Scar Healing, Week by Week
Most of the lip surgery recovery is over in about two weeks. The scar takes considerably longer. Swelling settles, stitches come out, you go back to work, and there is still a pink line under your nose that looks nothing like the result you were shown. At that stage, that line is normal.
From the first day to the end of the first year, this is what to expect after lip lift, reduction and reshaping surgery at Kamol Hospital, including Cupid’s bow enhancement, corner lip lift, philtrum work and dimple surgery. Your surgeon’s instructions come first wherever they differ from anything here.
How lip surgery heals, week by week
Stage | What is happening | What does it usually mean for you |
First 24 hours | Swelling builds and peaks | Ice as instructed, head kept elevated |
Days 2 to 7 | Swelling and bruising begin to settle; the area feels tight and partly numb | Soft food, gentle cleaning, a soft toothbrush |
Days 5 to 10 | Stitches are removed; absorbable sutures dissolve at about 7 to 10 days | Most people are back at work within a week |
Days 10 to 14 | Follow-up appointment with the surgeon | The minimum stay in Thailand for facial surgery is 10 to 14 days |
Weeks 2 to 6 | The wound has closed; the scar is firm and pink; numbness fades | Scar care can begin, once your surgeon confirms the wound is fully closed |
Months 2 to 3 | Swelling has largely gone and the lip shape is close to settled | Best results are visible at about two to three months |
Months 6 to 12 | The scar flattens and the redness fades | Sun protection matters most in this window |
Lip surgery is often done in the same session as other facial work. If you are also having jaw or cheek contouring or rhinoplasty, your overall recovery follows whichever procedure takes the longest to heal.
Starting before the wound has closed is not a shortcut. Pulling on a lip incision that is still healing puts tension across the line you are trying to keep thin, and tension is one of the things that makes a scar widen.
If you were not given a routine, ask at your follow-up appointment before starting anything you found online. The surgeons who perform lip procedures here will tell you whether massage suits your incision and when to begin.
Which symptoms need to be checked?
Call the hospital on +662 559 0155 rather than waiting for your next appointment if you have:
- A fever
- Redness that is spreading outward from the incision
- Pain that is increasing after the third or fourth day instead of easing
- Discharge or a bad smell from the wound
- Bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure
- Swelling that comes up suddenly on one side after it had been settling
- Any part of the incision opening
These are uncommon. Each one is worth a phone call the same day, and none of them should wait overnight.
Risks that show up while the lip heals
Lip surgery can cause redness at the wound, swelling, pain for several days, numbness, bruising, haematoma, poor healing and asymmetry. Bleeding, infection and scarring are less common.
Two are worth expanding on, because they can change the final result and not only how recovery feels.
Asymmetry is normal early, when swelling is uneven, and only meaningful once the swelling has gone.
A scar that stays raised past the six-month mark is the one to raise at a follow-up. There are treatment options for a surgical scar that has not settled, and they work better when they are started early.
When is the result final?
There are two answers because the shape and the scar settle on different schedules.
The shape is close to final at two to three months, once the swelling has fully gone. By then the lip you see is broadly the lip you keep.
The scar is final at the end of the first year. Any conversation about revision belongs after that point, because a scar assessed at month three is being judged halfway through the process.
Thinking about lip surgery?
Whether a lip procedure suits you and what your scar is likely to look like is decided at an individual assessment with a surgeon. It cannot be judged from a description or a photograph. Send your goals, any previous facial surgery, and photographs from the front and side through the enquiry form, and you will have a reply within one to two business days.
Lip surgery recovery: questions patients ask
How soon can I go back to work?
Within a week for most people, though you will still be visibly swollen for some of it.
Is numbness in my upper lip normal?
Yes. It is a listed side effect and it usually improves over weeks. Numbness that has not changed at all after several weeks is worth mentioning at a follow-up.
Will the scar go away completely?
No. It fades and flattens until it is hard to see, but a surgical scar is permanent. If someone promises no scar at all, they are not describing this operation.
When can I start scar care?
Only after your surgeon confirms the wound has fully closed. Usually a few weeks, though your surgeon decides it from how your wound looks and not from a date.
How long do I need to stay in Thailand?
10 to 14 days for facial surgery, which covers stitch removal and your follow-up appointment.
