Nasolabial Fold / Cheek Line Treatment Bangkok, Thailand

Smooths deep facial lines with fillers or treatments, restoring youthful contours and refreshed appearance.

The nasolabial fold is the crease that runs from each side of the nose down toward the corner of the mouth. Everyone has one; it’s the natural boundary between the cheek and the upper lip. What changes with age is how deep it sits.

Three things drive that deepening. Facial fat pads in the cheek shrink and slide downward, so the tissue above the crease no longer supports itself. Collagen and elastin decline, and the skin loses its ability to spring back. And decades of expression — particularly a broad, frequent smile — etch the line in until it stays visible at rest.

Volume loss, skin laxity and repeated movement each need a different answer, which is why one treatment doesn’t suit everyone.

Treatment Options

1. Dermal filler injection

The most common choice for mild to moderate creases. Hyaluronic acid gel is placed under the skin to restore the volume that’s been lost, lifting the crease from beneath rather than filling the line itself. No incision, no downtime, immediate result. Best for volume-driven folds.

2. Fat grafting

Your own fat is harvested by liposuction from the abdomen or thighs, processed, and transferred into the cheek. It suits patients with more significant volume loss who want a longer-lasting result, and it can be combined with other facial work. Recovery is a few days of swelling. See facial contouring.

3. Energy-based skin tightening

Where the issue is loose, thinning skin rather than lost volume, non-surgical tightening stimulates collagen and firms the mid-face. It’s gradual and cumulative rather than immediate. See non-invasive face and neck treatment.

4. Surgery

For pronounced sagging where the whole mid-face has descended, injections address a symptom of a structural change. A facelift or neck lift repositions the underlying tissue. Cheek implants are another option where the bony support itself is the limiting factor.

Your doctor will assess which of these — or which combination — actually fits your face at consultation.

A good candidate

  • Mild to moderate creases, where volume loss is the main driver
  • Healthy skin at the injection site, with no active infection or inflammation
  • No history of allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid products
  • Realistic expectations about what a non-surgical treatment can change
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding

If the fold is deep because the whole mid-face has dropped, filler alone will overfill the cheek before it softens the line. You’ll be told if that’s the case.

Before your appointment

  • Discuss what you want to change, and hear what’s realistically achievable, at consultation.
  • Stop anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen or aspirin at least two weeks beforehand, along with supplements that increase bleeding — fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo, garlic and ginseng among them. Check with your prescribing doctor before stopping any regular medication.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before, to reduce bruising.
  • Reschedule if you have a cold sore outbreak or any facial skin infection.

The procedure

Numbing cream is applied first, and most hyaluronic acid products contain lidocaine, so discomfort is minimal. Examination and injection together generally take 10 to 15 minutes; allow half an hour at the clinic including preparation and review.

The doctor injects small amounts at several depths and points along the crease, moulding as they go, and checks symmetry against your face at rest and while smiling before finishing.

Post-procedure Care

  1. The patients should avoid intense or extended pressure within the treated area
  2. The patients should be informed about aftercare, such as avoiding massage, strenuous physical activity, and exposure to extreme cold or heat for up to six hours post-treatment
  3. It is important to schedule follow-up sessions to assess the clinical result. Touch-ups may be performed in the follow-up sessions if required.

Risks and Complications

Uncommon in experienced hands, but real:

  • Pain, tenderness, or a firm lump at the injection point
  • Swelling and bruising, usually settling within a week
  • Infection
  • Over-correction or asymmetry
  • Vascular occlusion — filler entering or compressing a blood vessel. This is the serious one. It can cause skin tissue loss and, very rarely, vision loss, and it’s why this region should only be injected by a doctor who knows the facial vasculature and has hyaluronidase on hand to dissolve the product immediately if the warning signs appear.

That last point is the honest reason to be selective about where you have mid-face injections done, rather than choosing on price.

Recovery and how long it lasts

Discomfort afterwards is minimal, and most patients are back at work the next day. Swelling settles over the first few days; the final shape is clear at about two weeks.

Hyaluronic acid filler in the nasolabial area typically lasts 12 months or more, depending on the product used, the volume placed, and how quickly your body metabolises it. Fat grafting, once the transferred fat has established its blood supply, lasts considerably longer.

Why patients choose Kamol Hospital for mid-face treatment

The nasolabial region sits over the facial artery and its branches. Every injection here is performed by a qualified doctor at Kamol Cosmetic Hospital in Bangkok, with emergency reversal agents immediately available. That’s the difference that matters in this specific area of the face.

A crease caused by sagging is not a crease caused by volume loss. Our surgeons perform the full range — filler, fat transfer, tightening, facelift — so the recommendation isn’t limited to whatever the clinic sells.

Kamol has three decades of facial surgery behind it, including high-volume facial feminization and facial contouring work. Doctors who reshape facial structure surgically read a face differently from injectors who only ever inject.

Licensed operating theatres, anaesthesia, and inpatient care on site — see our facilities.

Many patients treat the nasolabial fold alongside lip surgery, cheek augmentation or blepharoplasty in one visit. Coordinators and the Kamol Trip team build the schedule around your travel dates.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Usually around 12 months, sometimes longer. Product choice, the amount placed, your metabolism and how active you are all affect it. Top-ups maintain the result.

Minimal. Numbing cream plus lidocaine in the filler itself means most patients feel pressure rather than pain. It’s a short appointment.

The same day or the next. Some swelling and the occasional small bruise are the only visible signs, and they’re easily covered after the first 24 hours.

Poorly placed or over-filled product can flatten the cheek and heavy it up, which makes the lower face look fuller without softening the line. This is a technique issue, not a product issue — and hyaluronic acid can be dissolved if you’re unhappy with the placement.

It depends on what’s causing your crease. Volume loss in an otherwise firm face responds well to filler or fat transfer. Genuine mid-face descent needs lifting, and injecting into it will only add weight. That’s a consultation question, and an honest answer is worth more than a quick booking.

When the right amount is placed by an experienced doctor, results look natural. Your doctor will avoid over-filling, which can make the face look heavy.

Bangkok has a very large, competitive aesthetic medicine sector, and hospitals such as Kamol use the same internationally manufactured hyaluronic acid brands used in Europe, the US and Australia, at a substantially lower price. The important question isn’t the country — it’s whether a qualified doctor is injecting in a licensed medical facility. Ask that anywhere you go, including here.

Yes, and most international patients do. Filler is often added to a visit built around facial surgery or laser work. Because there’s essentially no downtime, it can be scheduled on the day you arrive or the day before you fly home.
