Body sculpting reshapes the body’s proportions rather than simply removing fat from one area. Using liposuction to reduce fat where it’s unwanted — the flanks, thighs, abdomen, arms, buttocks, or back — combined with fat transfer to add volume where the shape calls for it, the surgeon designs a silhouette that balances against your own frame.
That combination is what distinguishes sculpting from straightforward fat removal. Taking fat away from one area changes how every neighbouring area reads, so the plan has to consider the whole outline.
Looking for something more specific? If your goal is simply removing stubborn fat from particular areas, see our Liposuction page for the full range of techniques. If you have loose skin after significant weight loss, Body Contouring / Lipectomy addresses skin removal. For non-surgical fat reduction, see Non-Invasive Body Contouring.
Female Body Shapes
Each person stores fat differently. Female body shapes are commonly grouped into four types:
- I-shape (ruler): bust, waist and hips are similar in width, giving a straight silhouette. Fat is distributed across the abdomen, hips and chest.
- V-shape (cone): broad shoulders with narrow hips, buttocks and thighs. Fat concentrates around the chest, shoulders and face.
- A-shape (spoon): a smaller bust, with fat concentrated at the hips, buttocks and thighs.
- X-shape (hourglass): bust and hips are similar in width, with a waist more than about 9 inches (23 cm) smaller than the hips.
Body Sculpting for Women
The goal is a balanced hourglass shape: a bust and hips in proportion to the bone and muscle structure, a smaller waist, and subtle definition of the abdominal muscles. Procedures often combined in a female body sculpting plan include:
- Breasts: breast augmentation or breast reduction
- Abdomen and waist: tummy tuck / lipectomy, abdominal liposculpture and sexy line liposculpture
- Hips and buttocks: buttock augmentation / BBL and buttock lift
- Thighs: thigh liposuction and thigh lift
- Intimate area: labiaplasty
Male Body Types
Male body types are commonly grouped into three types:
- Ectomorph: a smaller bone structure and low body fat. Lean, with long limbs and narrow shoulders, and may find it hard to gain muscle.
- Endomorph: a larger bone structure and a tendency to store fat. A softer, rounder build where muscle definition is less visible.
- Mesomorph: a balanced build with broad shoulders and chest, well-developed muscle and moderate body fat. Gains muscle easily, with an athletic appearance.
Body Sculpting for Men
The goal is a V-shaped torso: shoulders wider than the waist and hips, a broad chest, a flat back, no excess fat around the waist and abdomen, and visible muscle definition across the chest, abdomen, shoulders and back. Procedures often combined in a male body sculpting plan include:
- Six pack surgery (abdominal etching)
- Liposuction of the abdomen, flanks and back, or tummy tuck / lipectomy where there is loose skin
- Gynecomastia surgery to flatten the chest
Who Is a Good Candidate?
- You want to improve your body shape, rather than lose a large amount of weight
- You’re in good general health
- You don’t smoke, or are willing to stop before surgery
- You have good skin elasticity and muscle tone
- You have realistic expectations about the result
Preparation
- Consult with a qualified surgeon to discuss treatment goals, then have a physical examination, lab test, and chest X-ray and adjust your current medication to confirm that you are available for surgery.
- Stop smoking
- Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements, as they can increase bleeding
- Adjust some medication before surgery
The Procedure
- Body sculpting is performed under sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the treatment plan and the number of areas treated.
- Small incisions of around 1 cm are made. The number of incisions depends on the number of areas being treated.
- A tumescent solution is injected to reduce bleeding and loosen the fat. Fat is then removed with a cannula, using traditional suction or with laser or ultrasonic energy to break down the fat first.
- Where needed, purified fat is transferred to other areas to add volume and balance the body’s contours.
- The incisions are closed with stitches.
Post-operative Care
- Patient may experience mild fluid drainage from the treatment area during the first 24 to 72 hours after surgery, which is considered a normal part of the healing process.
- A compression garment should be worn at all times except during showering. Compression garments reduce swelling and speed up your recovery. Your plastic surgeon will let you know when you can stop wearing the compression garment.
- Try to resume your routine activities at home. Light activities will also help keep fluids moving in the body and reduce swelling.
- You can shower 24-48 hours after surgery, but you need to put the garment back on, which may be difficult. Make sure you have someone to help you. When you shower, you can run soap and water over the areas without scrubbing. The surgical area should be gently dried with a clean towel.
- Avoid still (non-running) water for two weeks after surgery. Don’t let the wound wet, including baths, swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, oceans, etc.
- Postoperative lymphatic drainage massage may be recommended in some cases to reduce swelling and support recovery.
- Routine activity is not prohibited.
- Exercise should start at around two weeks.
- Follow up on all appointments.
- Take stitches off for seven days after surgery.
Risks and Complications
As with any surgery, body sculpting carries risks:
- Seroma (fluid collection under the skin), one of the more common concerns. It can be drained with a needle or a temporary drain.
- Bruising, swelling and discomfort
- Temporary numbness of the treated skin
- Uneven contours, rippling or asymmetry
- Infection
- Partial loss of transferred fat, which may need a top-up
- Skin burns from laser or ultrasonic devices, which are rare
- Blood clots or fat embolism, which are rare but serious, especially with large-volume procedures
- Risks from anesthesia
Early diagnosis and good aftercare help prevent complications and support healing.
Before & After for Body Sculpting Surgery

What are the differences between Body Contouring and Body Sculpting?
The two terms are often used interchangeably, but at Kamol Hospital we use them as follows:
- Body sculpting reshapes the body mainly with liposuction and fat transfer. It suits people with moderate fat deposits and good skin elasticity, where removing or adding fat is enough to create the desired curves.
- Body contouring also removes loose skin, often after major weight loss or bariatric surgery. Large amounts of excess skin can cause discomfort, sweating and skin irritation in skin folds. Procedures include a tummy tuck, lower and upper body lift, and liposuction. See Body Contouring / Lipectomy.
Many patients benefit from a combination of both. If you’d prefer to avoid surgery, non-invasive body contouring using cooling, radiofrequency or ultrasound technology may help with small fat deposits.
What is the difference between Lipectomy and Liposuction?
Liposuction (lipoplasty) removes fat through a thin tube (cannula) inserted through small incisions. It is used on areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms and neck, and leaves the treated skin smooth when skin elasticity is good. A compression garment is worn afterwards to reduce swelling and help the skin settle.
Lipectomy (excision of skin and fat) removes both excess fat and loose skin through longer incisions. It is used when skin won’t tighten on its own, typically after major weight loss. Incisions are sometimes extended to avoid leftover skin at the ends of the scar (“dog ears”). Examples include tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), arm lift (brachioplasty), thigh lift and buttock lift.
Key difference: liposuction removes fat only and leaves small scars. Lipectomy removes fat and skin, and leaves longer scars.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is body sculpting?
Body sculpting refers to a transformative cosmetic procedure designed to refine and enhance your natural physique. It involves removing stubborn pockets of fat and, in some cases, strategically redistributing it to create a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing silhouette.
Unlike traditional weight loss methods, body sculpting focuses on targeted areas, thus allowing our skilled surgeons to artistically sculpt your body to achieve your desired look.
Can the fat removed be used elsewhere in my body?
Yes. Purified fat can be transferred to add volume where it’s needed, most commonly the buttocks (Brazilian butt lift), hips or breasts. Part of the transferred fat is naturally absorbed over the first few months, so a top-up session is sometimes needed. The fat that survives becomes a permanent part of the tissue.
How much weight will I lose?
Body sculpting changes your shape and proportions more than your weight. Fat is light for its volume, so the change on the scales is usually small, while clothes fit noticeably differently. The best candidates are close to their goal weight, generally with a BMI under 30. If you need to lose a significant amount of weight first, see Weight Reduction Therapy or Bariatric Surgery.
Will my skin sag after the fat is removed?
If your skin is elastic, it usually tightens to fit the new shape within a few months. If your skin is already loose, for example after major weight loss or pregnancy, removing fat alone may leave it sagging. In that case, combining liposuction with a skin-tightening procedure such as a tummy tuck or body lift gives a better result.
Can men have body sculpting?
Yes. Men commonly have liposuction of the abdomen, flanks and back to create a V-shaped torso, often combined with six pack surgery to define the abdominal muscles. Excess chest tissue can be treated with gynecomastia surgery.
When will I see the final result?
You’ll notice a change in shape straight after surgery, but swelling hides much of the result at first. Most swelling settles over the first few weeks, and the final shape is usually visible after 3–6 months. Wearing your compression garment as instructed helps the skin settle smoothly.
How long should I stay in Bangkok after body sculpting?
Plan to stay in Bangkok for about 7–10 days, until your stitches are removed on day 7 and your surgeon has checked your healing. If several areas are treated or other procedures are combined, allow a little longer. Thailand is one of Asia’s leading destinations for body contouring surgery, and Kamol Trip can arrange accommodation and transfers close to the hospital.
