Can you eat eggs after rhinoplasty? Your diet, week by week

Yes. Cooked eggs are safe to eat after rhinoplasty unless you have an egg allergy. There is no clinical evidence that eggs slow healing, inflame a wound or make scarring worse.
For the first two to three weeks, texture shapes your diet more than ingredients. A splint on your nose, swelling inside it and the need to keep your upper lip still make some foods harder to eat, whatever they contain.
What can you eat after rhinoplasty?
In the first week, choose foods you can eat in small bites with little chewing. Eggs, rice soup, yogurt, soft fish and mashed vegetables all work. The table covers the foods people ask about most.
Food or drink | In the first week? | Why |
Cooked eggs (scrambled, boiled, omelet) | Yes | Soft and high in protein |
Rice soup, porridge, yogurt, mashed potato, tofu, bananas, smoothies, ice cream | Yes | Little or no chewing needed |
Cooked chicken, fish and seafood | Yes, if soft or cut small | Tough meat needs a lot of chewing |
Raw or undercooked egg, meat or fish | No | Risk of food poisoning |
Hard, crunchy or chewy food (chips, nuts, crusty bread, jerky) | No | Wait until around weeks two to three |
Food that needs a wide bite (burgers, whole apples) | Cut it small | Opening wide moves your upper lip |
Spicy food | Go easy | It can make your nose run and set off sneezing |
Salty food | In moderation | For comfort while swelling settles |
Hot soups and drinks | Warm, not hot | Many surgeons advise this in the first few days to limit nasal bleeding |
Alcohol | No, while on pain medicine | It can interact with your prescribed medicine |
Why does texture matter more than ingredients?
Your upper lip needs to stay still. The rhinoplasty aftercare instructions ask you to brush your teeth gently to limit movement of your upper lip and to avoid big facial expressions such as smiling widely or laughing. Biting hard, chewing for a long time and opening wide all move the same area.
A splint sits on your nose. You usually wear it for one week. It makes large bites awkward, so cut your food small.
Your nose is blocked. Swelling inside your nose means you breathe through your mouth while you eat, so small bites and a slower pace help. Food may taste very different for a week or two. Your sense of taste returns as the swelling settles.
Anesthesia can also affect your appetite. Some rhinoplasty techniques use local anesthesia, and you go home the same day. Others use general anesthesia with an overnight stay. After general anesthesia, you may not feel like eating for a day or two. Small, frequent meals are easier than full plates.
Does the type of rhinoplasty change what you can eat?
It can. Most rhinoplasty incisions are on or inside the nose, away from anything you eat. Perinasal augmentation is different. Your surgeon places an implant through an incision inside your mouth, so food touches a healing wound. In that case your surgeon gives you specific diet and mouth-care instructions.
If you combine rhinoplasty with facial contouring or corrective jaw surgery, the diet for that procedure is stricter and lasts longer. Follow the instructions for the bone or jaw work, because those set your limits.
When can you eat normally after rhinoplasty?
Most people eat a soft diet for the first week, return to most everyday foods once the splint comes off, and add hard, crunchy and chewy food back gradually from around weeks two to three.
When | What to eat | What is happening |
Days 1 and 2 | Small, soft, frequent meals and plenty of fluids | Appetite is often low, especially after general anesthesia |
Days 1 to 7 | Soft diet, food cut small, nothing hard or chewy | The splint is in place, usually for one week |
Days 7 to 14 | Most everyday foods are still cut small | The splint is off; stitches that do not dissolve usually come out within the first two weeks |
Weeks 2 to 3 | Harder, crunchier and chewier foods, added back gradually | Swelling and bruising settle over two to three weeks |
Your surgeon adjusts this timeline at your follow-up, based on your technique and how you are healing. If a food is still hard to eat, mention it at that appointment.
How should you plan meals if you are traveling to Bangkok for surgery?
Plan your first week around soft food. Thai rice soup (khao tom) and rice porridge (jok) are soft, easy to find and practical for the first week. Many other Thai dishes are very spicy or crunchy, and some contain raw seafood, so check before you order.
Tell the care team about any food allergies or dietary needs before your surgery, so your hospital meals account for them.
How long you need to stay depends on your technique and follow-up schedule. Confirm it at your consultation before you book flights.
Where does the advice to avoid eggs come from?
The belief that eggs, chicken, seafood or fermented foods harm a healing wound, or make a scar raised or dark, is common across much of Asia.
No clinical evidence supports it. Eggs, chicken and fish supply protein, which your body uses to repair tissue. Cutting them out after surgery removes something useful and gives you nothing in return.
There are two real exceptions:
- Allergy. If you are allergic to eggs or shellfish, avoid them as usual, and tell the care team before surgery.
- Raw or undercooked food. Runny yolks, homemade mayonnaise, raw egg in desserts and raw seafood carry a risk of food poisoning, and you want to avoid vomiting while your nose heals. Cook eggs and seafood all the way through.
Can any food reduce swelling after rhinoplasty?
No food has been shown to shorten swelling after rhinoplasty or change the shape your nose settles into. It can take up to four months to get a good idea of your result, and up to a year for the final outcome. That timeline comes from the surgery, not your diet.
Eating less salt while swelling settles is reasonable for comfort, but it is not known to change your final result. Pineapple and bromelain supplements are often suggested for bruising, but there is little evidence that they help.
Tell your surgeon about any supplement before you take it. Before surgery, your care team will ask you to list all your medicines, vitamins and herbal products, because some affect blood clotting.
When should you contact your surgeon?
Most eating difficulty after rhinoplasty is an inconvenience. Contact your surgeon promptly if you have:
- A fever or swelling that gets worse instead of settling
- Pain your prescribed medicine does not control
- Bleeding that starts or starts again while you eat
- Vomiting, or you cannot keep fluids down
- A rash or hives after eating

Frequently asked questions
Can I eat eggs after rhinoplasty?
Yes, as long as they are cooked through. Avoid raw or runny eggs, and avoid eggs completely if you are allergic to them.
Can I eat chicken after rhinoplasty?
Yes. Cooked chicken is a good source of protein. In the first week, choose soft or shredded chicken and cut it small.
When can I eat solid food after rhinoplasty?
Soft solids such as eggs, rice soup and soft fish are fine from the first day or two. Hard, crunchy and chewy foods usually return from around weeks two to three.
Is it hard to eat after rhinoplasty?
It is usually slower rather than hard. A blocked nose means you breathe through your mouth, so small bites and soft food make eating easier in the first week.
Can I eat spicy food after rhinoplasty?
Spicy food does not slow healing. Go easy on it for the first week or two, because it can make your nose run and set off sneezing.
Can I use a straw after rhinoplasty?
Drinking through a straw works your upper lip, so a cup or spoon is simpler in the first week.
Can I drink alcohol after rhinoplasty?
Not while you take prescribed pain medicine. Your care team will ask you to avoid alcohol for at least one week before surgery. Ask your surgeon when it is safe to drink again afterward.
