Preventive Healthcare for Transgender People in Bangkok, Thailand

Focuses on screenings, health monitoring, and tailored care to support long-term wellness in transgender individuals.

Kamol Cosmetic Hospital has performed gender-affirming surgery for over 25 years. In that time, we’ve learned something that general practice often misses: after transition, standard health screening no longer fits neatly.

The reason is straightforward. Screening guidelines are written around bodies that haven’t been altered by long-term hormone therapy or surgery. A trans woman who has had vaginoplasty still has a prostate, and still needs prostate cancer screening on a schedule comparable to cisgender men of her age — but a clinic filing her records as female may never think to offer it. A trans man who has kept his cervix still needs cervical screening. Someone on oestrogen for fifteen years carries a cardiovascular and clotting risk profile that neither the male nor the female guideline describes accurately.

Osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and several cancers all behave differently under long-term hormone therapy. That’s not a reason for alarm — it’s a reason to be screened by people who know what to look for.

Our Preventive Healthcare Services Include

1. Hormone therapy and monitoring

Our endocrinologists set hormone regimens to your individual goals and review them as your body responds — adjusting dose and route, and tracking the bloodwork that keeps the regimen both effective and safe. Monitoring is the part people skip and the part that matters most over a twenty-year horizon.

See gender-affirming hormone therapy for the full service.

2. Mental health support

Our team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, and nurses experienced in gender care. Support ranges from assessment and letters required before surgery, through to ongoing therapy for gender dysphoria, anxiety, depression, or simply the weight of a long transition. See mental healthcare.

3. Preventive care across specialties

Kamol Cosmetic Hospital provides multidisciplinary care, including cardiovascular, urological, gynecological, plastic surgery, and hormone therapy.

Cancer Screening

Screening is matched to the organs you actually have, not the gender marker on your file. That means prostate screening for trans women who retain a prostate — including after vaginoplasty — breast screening according to oestrogen exposure and family history, cervical screening for trans men who haven’t had a hysterectomy, and chest wall assessment after top surgery, where a small amount of breast tissue always remains.

Urogenital Care

Long-term follow-up for both trans women and trans men, covering neovaginal health and dilation after SRS or peritoneal vaginoplasty, urinary function, and gynaecological care where relevant.

Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Checkup

Our cardiologists conduct specialized heart and brain blood vessel checkups for transgender individuals on long-term hormone therapy to monitor and manage cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health.

Routine Checkups

We recommend regular checkups every 6 months to assess liver and kidney function, screen for gastrointestinal issues, and monitor hormone levels for early detection and management of any health concerns.

Bone density

Hormone therapy — and particularly any period without adequate hormone cover after gonadectomy — affects bone mineral density.

Sexual health

STI screening and sexual health care as part of routine follow-up.

Vaccination

Routine adult vaccination brought up to date as part of your annual review.

4. Before and after surgery

Preventive care doesn’t begin after the operation. Pre-operative assessment identifies the conditions that raise surgical risk and gets them managed first — see pre-transgender affirming surgery. Afterwards, follow-up continues for as long as you want it to, whether you had surgery here or elsewhere.

If you’re considering surgery and haven’t started, fertility preservation is worth discussing before hormones or gonadectomy, since some of those decisions can’t be reversed later.

Why have your preventive care at Kamol Hospital

We already know this patient group. Over 25 years of gender-affirming surgery means our doctors have followed thousands of patients through hormones, surgery and the decades afterwards. You won’t spend the first half of your appointment explaining your own anatomy.

Every specialty is in one building. Cardiology, urology, gynaecology, psychiatry, endocrinology and surgery all work from one record at our Bangkok hospital. Nothing gets lost between referrals, and nobody has to be told twice which organs you have.

Screening is matched to your body, not your paperwork. The most common failure in trans healthcare is a records system that decides what you get screened for. Here the screening plan is built from your hormone history and your surgical history.

Surgical and medical care aren’t separate departments. Complications, revisions, and long-term questions about surgical results are handled by the team that does the surgery. See our doctors and patient testimonials.

An environment where you don’t have to brace yourself. Staff here are used to trans and LGBTQ+ patients, names and pronouns are handled without commentary, and consultations are private. We say this plainly because for many patients it is the deciding factor, not a nice extra.

Support in your language, around your trip. Coordinators work in several languages, and Kamol Trip arranges accommodation, transfers, and scheduling so a full check-up fits into a visit.

Overall, transgender individuals may choose Kamol Hospital for preventive healthcare because of its specialized services, experienced healthcare professionals, and understanding of the unique needs and concerns of the transgender community.

At Kamol Hospital, we take pride in providing high-quality, compassionate care to transgender individuals. Our commitment extends beyond medical procedures to fostering a supportive and affirming environment.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Vaginoplasty does not remove the prostate, so the tissue remains and so does the need for screening. Follow a schedule comparable to cisgender men of your age, adjusted for the effect of long-term oestrogen and any anti-androgen use. Discuss timing with your doctor — this is one of the most commonly missed items in trans women’s healthcare.

Every six months is the usual recommendation once your regimen is stable — covering hormone levels, liver and kidney function, blood count, and lipids. More frequently in the first year, or after any dose change.

Yes. Long-term follow-up doesn’t depend on where you were operated on, and many patients transfer their ongoing care to us after surgery abroad.

Thailand has one of the longest-established gender-affirming surgical traditions in the world, and Bangkok hospitals see a volume of trans patients that few countries match. That depth applies to the medical side as much as the surgical: endocrinologists, urologists and gynaecologists here manage long-term hormone therapy and post-surgical anatomy as routine work rather than as unusual cases. Kamol Hospital operates under Thai Ministry of Public Health hospital licensing with Thai Medical Council registered doctors.

On its own, it depends on what’s available to you at home — and for many patients the honest answer is that a good local provider is more practical for six-monthly bloodwork. Where travelling makes clear sense is when local care can’t manage post-surgical anatomy, when you’re already coming for surgery and can attach a full screening panel to the trip, or when you want a comprehensive baseline assessment from a team that specialises in this. Cost is also well below Western equivalents, so a full panel here is often cheaper than a partial one at home.

Your current hormone prescription and doses, any recent blood results, a summary of surgeries and dates, and a list of other medications. If you don’t have records, come anyway — we’ll start from where you are.

Yes. Consultations are private, staff use your name and pronouns as a matter of course, and medical records are confidential under Thai law. If there’s anything specific you’d like handled a particular way, tell your coordinator at booking rather than on the day.

Yes — our psychiatrists and psychologists provide the mental health assessment required before gender-affirming surgery, and pre-operative medical clearance is arranged alongside it. See pre-transgender affirming surgery.
