Leakage Implant Revision

Leakage and rupture refer to the breaking or leaking of a breast implant. Leakage occurs when the implant's outer shell (also known as the capsule) is damaged, causing the silicone gel or saline inside to leak out. Rupture refers to the breaking of the implant itself, resulting in leakage of the contents. This can happen as a result of normal wear and tear over time, or due to trauma to the breast. Symptoms of leakage or rupture may include changes in the shape or size of the breast, pain, or discomfort. It is important to have any suspected leakage or rupture evaluated by a medical professional.

Treatment for a ruptured or leaking breast implant typically involves surgery to remove and/or replace the affected implant. If the rupture or leakage is detected early and the implant is still intact, the implant may be removed and replaced without causing significant damage to the breast tissue. However, if the implant has been leaking for an extended period of time, there may be damage to the surrounding tissue that may require additional surgery to repair.

Treatment for a ruptured or leaking implant

If an implant has ruptured or leaked, it should be removed as soon as possible to avoid any further complications. In case of a saline-filled implant, the implant will deflate once the rupture occurs, and the saline will be harmlessly absorbed by the body. In case of a silicone-filled implant, the silicone gel may stay inside the capsule or migrate to other parts of the body, so it's important to remove the implant and the capsule.

It's important to note that breast implant rupture or leakage can occur without any symptoms, so it's important to regularly schedule follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor the condition of the implants.

If the patient decides to replace the implant, it's important to wait at least 3-6 months after the removal of the ruptured/leaked implant to allow the breast tissue to heal and settle before placing a new implant.
