Risks and Complications for Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure that aims to restore the shape and appearance of the breast following a mastectomy (removal of the breast) or partial breast removal. The goal of breast reconstruction is to create a breast that is as similar as possible to the patient's natural breast in terms of shape, size, and appearance. 

Breast reconstruction is considered a safe surgical procedure, but like any surgical procedure, it carries a certain degree of risk and potential complications. The safety of the procedure will depend on many factors such as the patient's overall health, the type of reconstruction technique used, and the surgeon's experience.

Whilst rare, risks and complications can include:

Infection: The surgical incision site can become infected, which can lead to redness, swelling, and discharge. If left untreated, an infection can delay the healing process and increase the risk of complications. Patients may be given antibiotics to prevent infection, but if an infection does occur, it can be treated with antibiotics. In some cases, a patient may require additional surgery to remove infected tissue.

Hematoma and Seroma: Hematoma is a collection of blood outside of blood vessels, which can occur after surgery. It can cause pain, swelling, and an increase in the risk of infection. Seroma is a buildup of clear fluid in the surgical area, which can occur after surgery. It can cause pain, swelling, and an increase in the risk of infection. These conditions can be treated by draining the fluid or blood, but in some cases, it may require additional surgery.

Numbness or loss of sensation: The nerves in the breast area may be damaged during surgery, which can result in numbness or loss of sensation in the breast, chest, or nipple area. This can be temporary or permanent. In some cases, the patient may experience a burning sensation or a feeling of tightness in the breast.

Unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome: The final result of the breast reconstruction may not be satisfactory, and further surgeries may be needed to achieve the desired outcome. This can include asymmetry, malposition, or dissatisfaction with the size and shape of the reconstructed breast. It's important to have realistic expectations.

It's also important to note that breast reconstruction is a complex surgery, it may not be suitable for some patients, and it's important to have realistic expectations. The final result may not be perfect, but the goal of the surgery is to help patients regain their self-esteem, self-confidence, and help them move on from their diagnosis and treatment.
