Phimosis is a condition in which the foreskin of the penis is tight and cannot be pulled back (retracted) over the head of the penis. This inability to retract the foreskin can cause problems such as difficulty urinating, pain during erections, and an increased risk of infections. Phimosis can occur naturally in young boys and typically resolves with age as the foreskin gradually becomes more retractable. However, in some cases, phimosis may persist into adulthood or develop later in life.
Treatment for phimosis depends on the severity of the condition and may include conservative measures such as topical steroid creams to help soften the foreskin and encourage stretching, as well as gentle manual stretching exercises. In cases where conservative measures are not effective, or if complications such as recurrent infections occur, surgical intervention, such as circumcision or a dorsal slit procedure, may be recommended to correct the problem.
